There is both internal and external conflict here. Kino struggles internally (man vs himself) between the promises the Pearl can give and the dangers keeping the Pearl can inflict. Externally (man vs man) certainly there are outside forces that seek to take the Pearl from Kino using violence and trickery. Juana has similar conflicts but feels the negative energy of the Pearl more keenly than her husband.
