Kino, with his obsession for the pearl, has lost everything of value to him. The pearl has now turned gray and does not look beautiful and valuable the way it formerly did. He sees Coyotito with his head shot away in the cave; he saw the eyes of the man lying in the pool. The story says that the pearl look "malignant." It is hurtful; the music of the pearl has become distorted and unmusical. His life, since he found the pearl, has turned into a nightmare indeed.
