Certainly Kino was as poor as the villagers before he found the Pearl. When he was able to visit the pearl buyers, his status became that of a rich man. Few people in the village visit the pearl buyers independently with such a treasure. There is plenty of gossip among his neighbours and friends regarding his good fortune and new status. The pearl buyers, however, merely see Kino as another ignorant villager to take advantage of.
