We can admire Kino for his physical strength and great care he has for his family, In Kino's head there was a song now, clear and soft, and if he had been able to speak of it, he would have called it the Song of the Family. After Kino discovers the pearl, we can admire him for not giving in to the pearl merchants, who are little more than thieves, but we lose some respect for Kino when he puts his life in danger for the pearl.
