Kino's neighbours are unsure if KIno's decision is wise. Either the buyers were being honest about the worth of the pearl or they had worked out their scheme beforehand. Some neighbours felt Kino was being valiant buy refusing to sell his pearl; other neighbours felt Kino was disturbing the natural balance of their relations with the town's pearl buyers.
