Kino is a prototypical Mexican-Indian who works as a pearl diver. When we first meet Kino, he is a devoted father and husband to Coyotito and Juana, respectively. Kino is the novel's main character of the story, an 'everyman', who finds himself becoming increasingly violent, paranoid and defiant, as he faces opposition from others after he finds the pearl. Kino's obsession with the pearl causes him to assault his wife and murder those who threaten him.
