The conflicts in Chapter Three all deal with greed and desire. Kino sees finding the pearl in terms of affording the family a future. The priest sees the improvements in his church, the doctor envisions a return to his homeland, and the pearl buyers see and opportunity to line their own pockets at the expense of a pearl diver. Each of these conflicts also effects the family in terms of breeding inner conflicts between Juana and Kino.
