Are some of the conflicts avoidable or is kino a victim of circumstances beyond his control?

If Kino wished to keep his pearl then circumstances are beyond his control. The fate of poor people like kino is to stay poor. Other men will take advantage of him or kill his family to take his wealth. There are no laws protecting him.
