Unfortunately, yes. I believe Steinbeck's representation rings true. It is very common for people to turn against friends and neighbors or to find them unworthy when they have immense good fortune. The are amoral people in all walks of life...... and Steinbeck chose to portray these behaviors in doctors and priests. Note..... not everyone is like this, and he did indulge in a bit of exaggeration.
