Rameck feels a need to help hs community. Most of this chapter revolves around the boys' experience at summer camp. Very little is said about Rameck's feelings about his community.

My uncles, who belonged to the Nation of Islam, and Bill, the barbershop owner, had taught me that I had a responsibility to help my community.
