Sam knew the deal was wrong, but he needed the money and wished to lessen the burden on his mother. He justified his acceptance by questioning why he shouldn't "get a little piece of the action."

The butterflies in my stomach told me this was wrong, but I told myself I needed the money. If I could take care of myself, Moms wouldn’t have to worry about me. And why shouldn’t I get a little piece of the action?
