No, Carla's acceptance of the boys extended to accepting them for who they were as individuals. She did not try to change them.

Carla didn’t try to change us, and that was important. Rameck, George, and I wanted to be able to enjoy college without suddenly looking or sounding like boys who went to prep schools all of their lives. We liked our ’hood gear: baggy jeans, boots, and rap music. Still do. Carla accepted that. She always seemed to know how to reach us and just what to say.
