Dally is the wildest member of the greasers. He is the only member who has spent time in prison. Johnny is the second youngest member of the gang and is often referred to as the "gang's pet." Dally projects much of his empathy onto Johnny. Like Dally, Johnny has had a bad home life. Johnny idolizes Dally and Dally takes care of Johnny. Dally wants to protect Johnny who still holds innocence and kindness: Dally feels that he has lost these traits.
