He was trying to be both a parent and brother.

It wasn't that he couldn't show him that he loved him, it was the fact that roles had changed, and Darry could no longer be just the "big brother." He had to be mom and dad too.

Dallly is a tough guy and also had to do a balancing act as brother and parent.
