where do they live?

The story is apparently set in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is not clearly outlined, however. It was based on SE Hinton's as a teenager in the

1960's.

It is not necessary for the novel to make the setting explicit as Hinton is representing tennagers across America at the time. By keeping the setting non-specific, it is easier for readers to imagine the story in their community. In this way, the story is more realistic and hard-hitting.
