When did Cherry and Ponyboy connect about the sunsets again? Why was this encounter important? What did they learn?

The sunset motif is used again later in the novel when Ponyboy sees that everybody has it hard, even Socs, "hundreds of boys who maybe watched sunsets and looked at stars and ached for something better."
