When Cherry criticized Dally, why did Johnny and Ponyboy become defensive?

According to Ponyboy, they became defensive because when someone is in a gang you stick up for your buddies no matter what....... a gang isn't a gang if you "don't stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers...."
