I think the cause of death, Johnny stabbing him to protect Pony at night at the park is most relevant. He was a Soc so his parents gave him things. We learn later, from Randy, that Bob's parents bought him things because they did not know how to parent very well. Bob longed for boundaries and direction from his parents. I'm not sure your other questions are really answered in the text.
