What does this mean (Quote from the outsiders Chapter 6)

"I couldn't tell Dally I hated to shoot things. He'd think I was soft." (chapter 6)

This quote infers that Ponyboy doesn't want to admit to Dally that he doesn't like to kill animals because Dally would think him sentimental or wimpy.

"Yeah," I said. "Darry always got the most ducks, though. Him and Dad. Soda and I goofed around too much, scared most of our game away." I couldn't tell Dally that I hated to shoot things. He'd think I was soft.
