What causes Johnny and Ponyboy to come back to face the police?

After the boys learn that Cherry is willing to testify on their behalf, the boys reconsider their decision. It is actually Johnny who makes the final decision, citing that Ponyboy shouldn't have to hide away. He also believes that he has a very good chance of being let off easy because he's never been in trouble before.
