In context, Cherry is describing the difference between the Socs and the Greasers. She is noting that the Socs are superficial.... only concerned with appearances and material things.... the things that money can buy. Cherry compares being a Soc to being in a "rat-race" where everyone is trying to one-up each other. Greasers, however, are seen as more emotional, and Cherry wonders what it would be like to embrace emotions rather than being "cool".
