The two rules the Greasers adhere to among themselves are always stick together, and don't get caught. Dally broke the second rule when he ended up getting caught by the police at the end of the novel. From the text, we can infer that Dally wanted to get caught, and he wanted to die. He just didn't feel like going on, especially, after Johnny's death.
