If Johnny and Ponyboy had never run into the burning church, how would the story have ended differently? Was running into the church to save the children a smart or stupid decision?

I think it was the decision they made for better or worse and they need to honour that. People cannot predict the future or order of events if someone does or doesn't do something. Johnny might not have died the way he did but there would just be a different reality that nobody can predict.
