Ponyboy vs Darry- Pony thinks Darry is too strict. Darry is trying to keep the family together. He wants better for Pony and keeps close tabs on him.At one point Darry and Pony have a fight at home, Pony runs away.

Socs Vs Greasers- these are two economic and social classes at odds with each other. In Chapter one, the Socs catch up with Pony walking home from the movies and try to beat him up.

Johnny and his parents- Johnny feels estranged from his parents. THey do not care about him. When Jonny's mother visits in the hospital, Johnny shouts at her to go away.
