Darry isn't mean, he is just frustrated. He has been thrust into a parental role since the parents died. He tries his best to parent Ponyboy. There is always the danger that Social services will take Soda and Pony away thus splitting up the family. Pony is angry that Darry has strict rules and boundaries about school and going out at night. Darry is just trying his best to take care of Ponyboy.
