I think that Ponyboy is initially in denial over Johnny's death. Even after Ponyboy tells the other Greasers that Johnny is dead, Ponyboy still inwardly tells himself that Johnny is still alive. Ponyboy puts himself in relative isolation for days after this in order to process Johnny's death.
