Hinton builds tension using Ponyboy's curiosity.... the questions he asks, the way he feels sick, and Darry's comments about his participation. After trhey arrive at the rumble, Ponyboy begins to note differences between the gangs, their organization, and the Greasers' lack of preparation. He makes special reference to the fact that Darry, who doesn't really want to be there.... is the best prepared of them all.
