Dolly does two separate things that help save Ponyboy's life. Explain them both.

When Pony and Johnny go into the burning building, Dally follows and helps Pony out. Then Dally saves Pony by putting out the fire on his body, he whacked Pony on the back and he "went down into a peaceful darkness."
