When the boys' parents died, Darry had to take over. He loves his brother, but their relationship has changed. Darry is trying to keep his family together. Because of their ages, they could easily be separated..... the younger boys going into foster care, or possibly an orphange. Darry doesn't want this to happen, thus, he has to be tougher on the boys, and he has to take on parental responsibilities in regard to his siblings.
