I think Ponyboy begins to see beyond the fancy cars and expensive clothes that the socs have. He sees Randy as a hurting and confused boy burdened by pressure. They were not the same pressures as Greasers might have but he still feels stress and loss. Randy laments the loss of his friend Bob as well as his disillusionment from fighting.
