Ponyboy learns that Dally really cares for Johnny like he is a brother. He sees that the reason he doesn't want Johnny to turn himself in has nothing to do with his hatred for the police. Dally explains "in a pleading, high voice" that he just doesn't want Johnny to get hardened in jail.
