What more do we learn about Johnny's character from the church fire scene?

We get to see Johnny's brave and "gallant" side in this scene. He feels partly responsible for the fire and in uncharacteristic fashion, he takes charge of the situation. Ponyboy describes how, "He wasn't scared either. That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes. He looked like he was having the time of his life." Even though Johnny's past had left him vulnerable, Pony finds courage and redemption in saving these kids.
