Ponyboy becomes extremely absent-minded after the hearing. He is disturbed, and his grades begin to drop. Pony's English teacher tells him that he can still get a C standing if he writes something that is important to him. Ponyboy becomes reflective and begins writing what he knows best: his own experience. Pony is much more self-aware and mature than he was in chapter 1.
