Ponyboy learns that Darry's strictness is a result of love.... that it isn't simply his older brother picking on him. Ponyboy assumed they just weren't close, and he resented Darry. After the fire, he sees that Darry's concern and strictness comes from the fact he isn't simply the older brother..... he's mom and dad..... he is responsible for keeping the family together.
