Johnny reveals that he's bought food (including a week's supply of baloney) and a copy of Gone with the Wind for Ponyboy, since he remembered that Ponyboy had wanted to read it. Johnny has bought peroxide, and reveals his plan to cut their hair and bleach Ponyboy's, as a disguise. I think this reflects the fact that Johnny is still a kid. A weeks supply of baloney with no fridge isn't very practical. The paroxide is also something a kid might come up with for a disguise. Johnny is also sensitive like Pony. Gone with the Wind becomes a story over which the two boys bond over.
