The major themes in this novel have to do with discovering your own identity as it is a "coming of age novel". Along with this is the importance of family and supportive relationships. The minor issues in the text are how violence is resorted to by individuals from all sections of the community but in the end the violence creates more problems than ever and is in no way a solution to conflict situations.
