The window is the main thing in this story. it is the cause for all this havoc.

The open window is a large French window opening on to the lawn of Mrs Sappleton's house and is central to the story. The window has different effects on Mrs Sappleton, her niece Vera and the sick visitor Mr Nuttel. For Mr Nuttel, the window is just an ordinary window until Vera, who has a knack for storytelling uses Mr Nuttel's ignorance of her aunt against him. She spins a haunting story about her aunt's husband and brothers going out of the window and being engulfed in the moor and how her aunt still believes they'll come back one day.

Mr Framton falls a prey to her prank and the window becomes a source of horror for him.As for Mrs Sappleton the window is a source of joy and longing as her husband and brothers come in through the window everyday after hunting.

When the awaited husband and brothers finally arrive, Mr Nuttel mistakes them for ghosts and flees from the house in a fit of terror. Thus the window serves its purpose to Vera and she succeeds in driving Mr Nuttel away.
