What story did she invent to explain his behaviour? Why does she tell such a tale about him?

Vera, who is a habitual liar, does not confess her part in what happens. Instead she makes up yet another story about Mr, Nuttel involving  “a pack of pariah dogs” in a cemetery “on the banks of the Ganges”. When he saw the hunter's spaniel, he ran away in fear. Vera uses one lie to cover for her other lies.
