The lions symbolize youth, strength and happiness for the old man. Santiago recalls this from dreams he has had; he used to see lions playing on the beach in his youth. Now on this particular quest, the lions remind Santiago of what he used to be. Santiago longs to feel the strength and vitality of a beast at home in the elements. The jungle visions that float through Santiago's head help him cope with his old broken body as he battles the fish.
