What is Santiago's physical conditon after his last fight with the sharks?

Santiago's hands are seized up and he is exhausted, "He tried to get up. But it was too difficult and he sat there with the mast on his shoulder and looked at the road" (121). When he finally rises, he has to sit five times before reaching home. Arriving at his shack, Santiago collapses on his bed and falls asleep."
