What does this tell us about the old mans character?

" If the other heard me talking out loud, they would think that i am crazy... But since i am not crazy, i do not care."

Santiago knows that other fishemen make fun of him but Santiago knows they do not know his majestic history. Santiagoo is his own man;  he knows himself and has the confidence to not listen to men who mock him.
