In the novella, The old man and the sea, Hemmingway presents Santagio as a character who can be seen as a tragic hero. One who tries to face adversity in a time of turmoil. He is a decaying and fragile fisherman who needs to have on last great catch to prove not only to the other fishermen who mock him, but to himself that he is still a man and nothing can take that away from him.
