The Old Man and the Sea

what are qualities or actions that seem to nominate Santiago for "Hemmingway hero" despite his advanced age?

A Hemingway's "hero" tends to live on the outskirts of society forging their own way despite others. His heroes have their own demons which they grapple with yet persevere in their quest. They are not sociable people rather they have fixed loyalties to few people and ideas. Santiago works on all those points.
