This question calls for your opinion, there is no right or worng answer. In my opinion, the story was an immediate success and continues to be popular because its protagonist is endearing, tenacious, and determined. Santiago wants nothing more than to fulfill his destiny.... to end his string of bad luck, and to accomplish something he can be proud of. In the end, he succeeds. Santiago retains his dignity and moves forward with hope.
