The fish is a living being, thus, as a character it is alive and a major part of the plot. Hemmingway's use of the fish is no different than the many nonhuman characters that have appeared in books throughout history....... the dog in To Build a Fire, Black Beauty, Lassie, Life of Pi (Richard Parker), and Smaug in the Hobbit.
