I'm not sure what you mean by "faces". Do you mean personality?

He felt that the sea was his mistress and the animals were his friends. Santiago felt the sea was a woman with many moods. She could be loving and seductive or angry and vengeful. His mistress (the sea) will give up her treasures freely or punish him for trying to take them.
