The old man has a relationship with nature. He "can feel the morning come" in the darkness. Santiago has his own set of values in nature. The sea is feminine, his mistress; she can be cruel and indifferent or sensuous and giving.  The flying fish are his friends and he feels sympathy for the birds, especially the "delicate dark terns that were always flying and looking and never finding" things to eat.
