Santiago is an old man. He was once, at least to him, a fisherman of mythic proportions. Now he is bent and tired, frequently the joke of other fishermen with their powerboats. SAntiago goes out on , what would seem, one last conquest. He hunts the great Marlin and in hunting the great fish, Hemingway reveals the heart and soul of the old man. His hands are cramped and his body tired yet he still claims communion with the great fish. Fishing and the ocean Santiago's identity, passion, love and validation. He craves the Marlin not just as a conquest but as a brother worthy only to be caught by him.
