If you are referring to the battle between the fish and Santiago, we can say a bit of both. The great Marlin pulls Santiago out to deeper waters. Santiago fights to gain control but as the fish fights, there is a communion of sorts. The Marlin draws Santiago into its spell while Santiago fights to draw the fish into the boat.
