The Old Man and the Sea

Humility has been defined as "the understatement of a powerful personality."

What does this mean and to what extent does it apply to the kind of humility the old man has attained??

Certainly humility shows vulnerability and kindness, which are two powerful human traits. The wisest people know they have limitations and that others are needed in their journey. Santiago knows that Manolin is a true friend and his gifts are given out of love, not pity.
